I used to be a spiritual seeker in hiding. In fact, I hid it so well, I kept it from myself. Why I am out of the closet and sharing my path with you is because the world out there is so full of richness, I’d hate for you to miss out! Maybe you are secretly seeking abundance in your life too and are ready to come on the path. Here are ten surprising signs to tell you’re actually a spiritual seeker.
#1 You sang in church choir as a child
Even though I grew up in a catholic country, no one in my family went to church. That is, no one except me. I sang in the church choir, I listened to the sermon (and didn’t understand), and I went for the tea and cake part afterward. At the height of that period, I even wanted to attend a midnight Christmas mass, though I knew it wouldn’t happen. It just wasn’t a thing in my family, and I didn’t want to ask, as someone would have had to accompany me. Later on, I realized that it wasn’t the church part that I loved; it was the community. I was seeking out people coming together, working together, excited about a common goal.
#2 You don’t feel comfortable having a “normal” conversation
Do you notice that you have a hard time paying attention during a standard conversation? Whether it’s with someone you know really well or someone you’ve just met, you have difficulty being fully in on any basic, plain conversation. Truth is, you’re a spiritual seeker. You seek depth more than anything else, and so you steer away from shallow waters.
#3 You’re in search for the bigger picture
No matter what you do, you’re in it for the big picture, for how it all relates and fits together. You are forever in awe of getting the puzzle pieces in order and making sense of it all. To wonder at and unravel the mysteries of life. That is where the magic lies, and when you realize you’re part of it, you start finding your way.
#4 You have always asked yourself big questions
In my room as a teen, I had a wall plastered with a collage of pictures, and underneath some of them, I had written down thoughts, big, important thoughts. Only I knew they were there. Like whether it was a good idea to bring children into this world. Or whether we humans are, deep down, good or evil. Perhaps you, too, have asked yourself what the common threads are, what truth is, or why we are where we are. If you have always asked yourself big questions, it’s a sign you’re a spiritual seeker.
#5 You look out for others
Whether you are on a bus or at work, you can’t help but look out for others. You might not even be aware of it because it’s so ingrained. There’s a deep knowing within you that we’re all in this together. You bring along others as you make your way, simply because it’s in your nature. It’s a sign you’re a spiritual seeker.
#6 Nature fascinates you
When you need to refill your batteries, lick your wounds or discharge a heavy load, you find yourself in the woods, by a river or even just in a park. You find comfort, breathe deeply, connect with life out there, and you feel better. As much as nature nurtures us all, spiritual seekers intuitively go after this connection like moths flock to the light. It’s a natural pull, and it brings you into your equilibrium, so do use that connection.
#7 You seek and see beauty
Were you one of those kids that took forever to get from A to B? Beauty lies in all the little details, and it takes time to unravel and explore in depth. You wonder at the stars at night, and can sit and watch ants go up a tree. You look at the intricacies of woven textures and the lines on a raisin. When you seek beauty in all the little (and big) things, you’re likely a spiritual seeker.
#8 You eye the esoteric section in bookstores
I admit, I read my share of “esoteric” books, secretly. Honestly, I didn’t think it was okay to read anything outside the rational world. And it took me a while to figure out why it was and it wasn’t for me – I was seeking something beyond what meets the eye. Yet I was not fully satisfied with the partial answers I found. So, yes, if you’re secretly checking out some esoteric reads but they come up wanting, it’s a sign you’re a spiritual seeker.
#9 You have a melancholic side
The glass is half, well, you know the rest. Even though it’s full, there might be something missing, and this deep longing makes you not only a nagging neighbor but a human seeking connection. You might have felt shame (or pride) for your melancholic streak. You long for the times when things just seemed more, well, together. You don’t have to overthink it, though, it’s just another sign you’re a spiritual seeker.
#10 You secretly read self-help books
Oh no, you might say. Not self-help books, they didn’t provide what I needed. In fact, whether or not they’re your thing, having perused self-help books is one of the signs you’re a spiritual seeker. You seek answers, and why not find them in these kinds of books.
